If you’ve been told your business needs “search engine marketing,” you’ve probably also noticed nobody uses the phrase the same way. Some agencies mean Google Ads. Some mean SEO. Most mean “whatever we sell.” Here’s what the term actually covers, what each piece costs in Boise, and the order I’d buy them in if it were my business.
What “search engine marketing” actually means
Search engine marketing (SEM) is the umbrella for getting customers from Google. It has two halves that behave completely differently:
- Paid search (Google Ads, PPC). You bid on keywords and pay each time someone clicks. Traffic starts the day you turn it on and stops the day you turn it off.
- Organic search (SEO, including local SEO and the map pack). You earn rankings with a fast site, strong pages, a well-run Google Business Profile and reviews. It takes months to build and keeps paying after the work is done.
When someone in Boise searches “plumber near me,” the page they see has both: a few ads at the top, then the map pack with three businesses, then the organic results. Paid gets you into the first group. SEO gets you into the second and third — which is where most of the clicks go.
What each one costs in Boise
Paid search
Local service clicks in the Treasure Valley typically run $5–$30 each depending on the industry (legal, HVAC and medical are the expensive end). A realistic starting budget is $1,000–$3,000 a month in ad spend, plus a management fee — agencies usually charge 15–25% of spend or a flat $500–$1,500 a month. So a modest campaign is about $1,500–$4,500 a month all-in, and the meter runs forever.
Organic search / SEO
Local SEO in Boise runs $900–$2,500 a month from an independent specialist and $2,500–$7,500 from an agency. Mine starts at $900 a month with no contract. The difference from ads: the pages, profile and reviews you build in month three are still ranking in month thirty.
Which one should a Boise business buy first?
My honest answer, and it’s not the one that makes me the most money in every case:
- Buy ads first if you’re brand new, have zero reviews, and need calls this week to make payroll. Ads are the only thing that works in days.
- Buy SEO first if you’ve been open a year or more, have some reviews, and want customers you don’t have to keep paying for. This is most established Boise businesses.
- Do both if you can afford it — but run ads only for the two or three searches that make you the most money, and let SEO carry everything else.
The trap to avoid is paying for ads on searches you could rank for organically. If you’re in the map pack for “dentist Meridian,” you don’t need to also buy the ad above it — that money belongs in the next city page or the next round of reviews.
What “organic search engine marketing” looks like in practice
If you go the organic route, the work is specific: a technical audit and fixes, real title tags and headings on every page, a page for each service and each Treasure Valley city you serve, a Google Business Profile that matches the site exactly, a steady review routine, and monthly rank tracking so you can see it move. I laid the whole thing out in a 12-point checklist for optimizing a Boise website.
