When someone in Boise, Meridian or Nampa searches for a plumber, a dentist or a boutique “near me,” the three businesses in the map at the top of the page get most of the clicks and almost all of the calls. If you’re not in that box, you’re competing for the scraps below it. Here are the reasons I see most often when a Treasure Valley business isn’t showing up — and what actually fixes each one.
1. Your primary category is wrong
Google leans on your primary category harder than almost anything else. A practice listed under a broad category when a specific one exists, or a shop listed as “Store” instead of what it actually sells, is invisible for the searches that matter. Pick the most specific category that describes your main money-maker, then add secondary categories for everything else you do.
2. You’re fighting proximity you can’t control
The map pack is drawn from where the searcher is standing. A business on Eagle Road in Meridian won’t show for someone searching in downtown Boise no matter how good the profile is. That’s not a problem to fix on the profile — it’s a reason to build city-specific pages on your website for each area you serve, so you can win the organic results where proximity matters less.
3. Your website and your profile disagree
Google cross-checks your profile against your site. If the name, address, phone, hours or services differ — or if the profile links to an old URL — trust drops. One of the highest-leverage fixes I make for Treasure Valley clients is rebuilding the homepage so it mirrors the Business Profile one-to-one: same services, same categories, same story.
4. Reviews have stalled
Review count, rating and recency all matter. A business with 40 reviews and nothing new in eight months will lose to one with 25 reviews that gets two a week. Build a simple ask into your process — a text after the appointment, a card at the register — and reply to every review, good or bad.
5. The profile is thin
Empty service lists, no products, three photos from 2019, no posts. Google rewards profiles that look alive. Fill in every service with a description, upload real photos of your location and team, and post something monthly. It takes an hour and it compounds.
6. Your citations are a mess
Your business is listed on dozens of directories whether you put it there or not — Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing, the chamber, industry sites. If those listings show an old address or a different phone number, they dilute the signal. Cleaning them up is unglamorous and it works.
7. Nobody is measuring
Most owners check their ranking by searching from their own desk, which shows a result personalized to their location and history. Use a rank tracker that checks from points across your service area, and watch the trend monthly. For my local SEO clients I track dozens of keywords from points across Meridian, Boise, Eagle and Nampa every month; that’s how we know which pages to push and which ones are already winning.
Where to start
Fix the category first, then the website mismatch, then reviews. Those three alone move most businesses.
